They kept the wrong half of the name. The prefixes are the meaningful part of the real particle names, Pro-, Elec-, Pho-, Neu-, the ton/tron part doesn't really mean much of anything (maybe "particle" or something). What they needed was a dark suffix instead of a prefix. Can't think of one myself but I'm sure there's something that would work.

Greek word for dark is skotádi, so... Protadis, neutadis, electadis and photadis?
