It was sorta funny how surreal it was. I'm now intrigued to see where they actually go with Butcher's character. He was such an unlikable, unsympathetic, villian in the comic, the changes they've made to the show have made him more... anti-hero than villain, and a tinsy bit sympathetic. At this point? Probably not, but it's really anyone's guess. They're definitely making Starlight a more important character.

Yeah. Hilarious is the term I'd use for over the top black humor. I laughed because it was so totally unexpected. My viewing was sort of reluctant. I didn't much like the series at first but came to enjoy the very weirdness of it. The end of the final episode was a delight. If you can't get past the gore and violence of the whole series to find the termination of that awful woman, the most manipulative, evil character of the series to that point, who made a complete perversion out of the notion of motherhood, just to the point of ribald comedy, well, we just have different tastes.
As for Butcher, the guy on a mission for justice from the man who destroyed his family, well...It's like Don Quixote finds out he's been tilting at windmills to no avail. Butcher's self righteous anger at Homelander is utterly misplaced. Also, Homelander is just so vile and overwritten that he makes my skin crawl. The flip of him as Ward Cleaver after we'd come to see him as the ultimate mockery of virtuous American strength and masculinity was truly surreal. The writers must have had a great deal of pleasure weaving something together with that much irony.

Are there no spoiler thingies here on the new boards? Sheesh.
I really really liked this show. It's almost as great as She-Ra, but in a totally different way of course.
Like trolldonkey I've read the comics, but unlike him I liked it. It changes between great storytelling and juvenile crap all the time (always gross, but what can you do). I think they did a great job of adapting the greatness while leaving the crap behind, so I'm very excited for the rest of it. That last twist was delicious.
As for why they are loyal, like eeyore said Frenchie and MM have a preexisting relationship with Butcher, but the important bit is that Butcher has roped them into the deep end where it's sink (well, get horribly murdered) or swim (kill the supes). He tricked them all into it, but he's also a really good manipulator, both saving them and using their desperate situation to build a sort of group loyalty. Like how he offered Hughie a chance to get back at the supes by bugging their base, and then showing up to save Hughie when Translucent followed him back. And no way in hell was Butcher surprised when that happened. He expertly roped Hughie in by having him first bug the building, then having him fight Translucent and then making him complicit in killing the supe. Was it planned? Not really. But Butcher played it like a maestro.
You can assume he (or his mentor Mallory) roped in Frenchie and MM in the same way the last time.
The Deep is basically original to the tv show, he was a non-entity in a diving helmet in the comics. It's way off to the side for now, so I hope they tie it in somehow. It's interesting so far.
COMIC SPOILERS
COMIC SPOILERS
The original story Vogelman and Stillwell told Homelander is exactly *how* Becca died in the comics, but it was in a hotel room with Butcher, not a secret Vought lab. Billy killed the superbaby himself (it had Homelander eyes and was about to fry the entire building). It's delicious how they used the comic version as a red herring, and the new tale seems interesting, I hope they stick the landing on that.
end spoilers

Oh, and. Frenchie is sane, competent and french? None of those were really true in the comic!

Are there no spoiler thingies here on the new boards? Nope. You also can't drop and drop text and that is really shitting up my backside. That's because there is a darkness in your soul that craves gratuitous violence, misogyny, rape, and pedophilia. Perhaps you should talk to a professional. Everything else ulrik said is spot on.

Dang. Busted Or maybe my tolerance for gore is higher in comics. I'm extremely happy they toned it down for TV. I just think that Ennis can really write when he manages to look up from the gutter.

I just think that Ennis can really write when he manages to look up from the gutter. More like "when he has an editor willing to beat the gutter out of him with a clue-by-four".
