I finally decided to end my first Cyberpunk 2077 play-through and entered the final quest yesterday, after 200 hours of play. I could have done that far earlier, theoretically, but I just... didn't want to. It was so much... fun? Emotion? Life?

Why can't both be true? I for one am looking forward to the game when they patch it a bit and I get my new pc built. Everything I've heard about it is that it's a pretty great game that's unpolished. heh, polish.

If so, I'll pass - I get headaches (but no nausea) due to motion sickness.

I think one difference between Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk is the launch date - Witcher 3 launched in spring, Cyberpunk on Christmas. And even now it has higher numbers than Witcher 3 did at launch.
So if you wonder why companies really like to release stuff on time for Christmas even with bugs... This could be a hint why. Of course, there are other reasons Cyberpunk is doing better than Witcher 3 - CD Projekt and Cyberpunk became a bigger deal (thanks to Witcher 3). And I suppose there is also lockdowns all around the world meaning plenty of time for people to play through the game.
The main story arc was deliberately made shorter than that of Witcher 3, because they found that many people didn't finish it. Cyberpunk puts that content basically in side content, stuff that would have been in the main arc of Witcher 3.
I wonder if that really is an important metric to optimize for - whether people finished a game or not? As a content creator, it might be kinda frustrating to know that people enjoyed your content but never got to see the ending. But wouldn't it also be frustrating to know a lot of people miss story because they went the most straightforward way?

From a "get the buzz out" perspective, which sounds better "Man, the ending was fire! I'm gonna play again and go for [other] ending!" or "I got busy 3/4s of the way through and never finished. I've restarted a few times trying for the ending, but I just don't have time to replay all that..." Which is a 'complaint' I've actually heard about a few games. It's one I've made about Elder Scrolls games, which is a completely different issue*, so much side content I eventually get bored of the game and quit before getting anywhere near the end repeatedly. Even when I sat down and was 'dedicated' to just following the main quests, I kept bumping into side quests that were more interesting or served a direct "means to an end" that I got sidetracked). * I expect if I could stand the game play and other issues, I'd be fine with Witcher 3, being linear means I will be far more likely to complete the story. Too much shandification just means I get lost in content and eventually get bored of it. Probably, which has lead to games like Elder Scrolls, pure open worlds with no set "narratives" you have to follow. Which is vastly appealing to some, but you get the negative compliment I mentioned above, "I got bored with all that content", "I didn't have time to play a 300+ hour game", etc. Some companies embrace it and go deep, some go in the opposite direction, some try to straddle the line. If 'shandified open world' were a slider, I'd prefer my games to be just on the "non" side of the middle. I like being able to go off the beaten track to complete a mission (or even skip it if I so chose), but I just can't handle so much freedom as Elder Scrolls offers. I get bogged down in not "playing the game" to see the main quest line, and instead just spiff up the interiors of my ingame houses† or something. † Which is basically all I played Everquest 2 to do. Craft for my guild and decorate my houses (and the guildhouse). My guild didn't mind, they loved have a dedicated crafter who didn't ask for anything except materials (and the occasional tradeable house item quest reward), but I was mostly only playing the game to hang and chat with friends (and occasionally go assist a newby or join a raid at my middling level). I was definitely not playing the way most of my guildies were, power leveling to get to end game content. Admittedly, I do this in almost every MMO I've played, WoW, SWTOR, Everquest 2, STO, and Star Wars Galaxies. Really couldn't do it in Everquest 1, though I joined EQ1 so late it was basically "over" and I never quite made it to see the end game content before switching over to WoW with my buddies.

When it comes to freedom, a thing I like is that you really can approach each mission in different ways. There are some (side) missions that reward more for sneaking in, but you can go in guns blazing or gorilla arms punching, or you can sneak around and assassinate everyone and dump them in the nearest "recycle"* bin, or hack yourself through everything. Even in the main mission you have a lot of freedom on solving your problems the way your V would do it.
But maybe bad for you - when you first walk through a sector, you get phone calls from your fixer or messages all the time that you could do this or that. Plus there is always a gang fight or organized crime activity around that you can mess with. But the mission journal is good enough organized that you can find your way back quickly. (But the markers on the map could be better. Regular Gigs - side missions with a bit more meat - and "You can buy a car here" have the same icon, which I found dumb.)
*) Night City doesn't really look like they actually recycle anything.

But maybe bad for you ... It's definitely going to be bad for me. When I finally get around to playing I'll have to put my heavy blinders on and try to ignore frivolous side mission to the best of my ability.
