It seems that society been drifting from civil discourse. It seems to be far more common to observe "discussions" that rely on scoring points and generating soundbites to further substantiate the "us vs them" mentality rather that having an open, mutually respectful, and constructive discourse where the focus is to gain a better understanding of other viewpoints/perspectives. This thread is intended to highlight that the latter approach can build bridges rather than burn them. I would like to see Trevor Noah conduct more one-on-ones in this fashion[1]. Personally, removing live audiences from the equation also improves the quality of the experience by reducing immediate pressure to pander to one's own base.

Yeah, that's been the entirety of the last twenty years. I also really enjoyed his pool game against Lindsay Graham when he first took over the Daily Show, gave me hope that he was the right choice. Of course he then immediately squandered the good will I had extended* by being a partisan shill in every 'comedy' segment there after. * Which was needed because I'd wanted Jessica Williams to step into the host position.

What do you think of Jon Stewart's new show? I like it.

30 years, not 20. We haven't been massively online as a species for thirty years, but yes the absolute disgrace that is Congress has been in an uncivil discourse loop since 90s (possibly the mid to late 80s, I will admit I wasn't as 'aware' of what was going in congress before my adult years). I just discovered it existed like a month ago and then promptly forgot about it again. I'll have to track it down and set up some time to see how Jon has been faring.

I still haven't watched it... I keep forgetting (to be fair I work 10+ hours 4 days a week and then 6-10 hours doing lawns in my hood on two of my "off" days, except now that 'winter' is upon us that's cut to 2-3 hours a week)... So I have some time now, I think I'll look into Jon's new show.
