Reading the consent in gaming thread over there.... Every time I go into one of those I'm left with the impression that half the gaming tables in the world are filled with nearly catatonic people who are unable to escape the horrors they have lived though. The horrors of gaming and the need for consent. |

I know what you're talking about, fucking cancer invading rpgs and claiming they aren't safe (but then, they've been claiming this for years now, and here's the solution, consent forms for gaming). |

I've seen the same conversation on ENworld many times and it makes me wonder does the type of gamer who posts on forum overlap very tightly with the subsection that is all fucked up in the head? Not rock solid folks like us mind you, the other ones. I can't see tiptoeing around the traumas that the it appears many suffer from. I'm not going to be a dick but I lack patience for those who use a D&D session as anything other than a metaphor for colonialist white supremanc...I mean fun adventure gaming. My brother is constantly using D&D as a power trip to balance out his often crappy life, and gets all upset when shit goes bad. I don't give a fuck, don't bring that bullshit into my dungeon bash. Your PC failed his save and died? Big fucking deal. Roll up a new one, don't tell me you don't need this shit in your life right now when all the other bullshit is your fault anyway. I'm not a therapist, at least not a good one. |

I mean, even in that thread it's mostly normal people, just ones who have been trained by ENW to not rock the boat too hard, so they're politely putting up with the bs. Exactly. You have people in that thread citing therapy and counselling techniques. I'm sure that's good stuff, but, hey, wait, my table isn't a safe space; it's not a therapy session. It's a group of people getting together to blow off some steam. If we go the route of medicalizing play, what are we going to use for, you know, play? My table is like my living room. You're invited in based on having fun with what we're doing. Not being a dick to you if it doesn't mesh is one thing, but expecting me to pull out my counselling handbook and employ proper technique is asking a shitload of me that's absolute bullshit. Whatever happened to don't be a dick? Now we have handbooks? |

Hussar actually made some good points I didn't expect. From reading that whole thread its kind of sad. I know RPG gaming attracts the "fringes" and all that. But from reading that I would get the impression that RPG gaming is more of a therapy session for fucked up people. |
