I still hate Tagon in a beard. For a career man like him to just go and say "Bah, fuck it, regs don't matter in simspace" just doesn't feel like Tagon.
Granted this version has had subjective years in simspace to (be) change(d).

Maybe the regs of simspace don't say anything about beards. Although they might ought to ban excessive use of particle effects and other GPU crashing things. And anyone caught wearing a texture that causes a buffer overflow fault should probably be brought up on charges. Yeah. I know. The limits of early 21st century gaming don't apply to a system that can accurately simulate multiple biologies and the intelligences it supports.

In light of the 7/24 strip, maybe it's not a hard physics and chemistry simulation. Maybe they do need to worry about things like buffer overflows and excessive particle effects lagging everyone down. Not those things specifically, of course.

More likely, they are worried about power consumption. They don't know when the the worldship will call them back, and until then they have to make what they brought with them last.

The ban on long hair and facial hair in the military is quite recent . . . it started in WWI, so the gas masks could be sealed to the soldier's face (and also for cleanliness).
Before that, even at the start of WWI, long hair and facial hair was quite common . . . in some armies, you could tell a soldier's type quite accurately by his hair. A single braid with a toothbrush mustache might mean a light cavalryman, a ponytail and handlebar a dragoon, two braids and a fu manchu heavy cavalry . . .
In some cases you could even tell the regiment!
