As the thread title asks, we lived under some level of rules previously... I'm sure we did. I just never managed to run afoul of them, so I never noticed them. Do we need some level of rules and enforcement? If so, what?
That's the question for this thread, I'm primarily interested in what the refugees from the NightStar forums have to say, but know that the CMers aren't going to be completely ignored (except Kzach, everyone can safely ignore Kzach).

Whatever inspired Queeniegate should be in the big rules of what not to do.
Impersonating former members who were convicted of nasty crimes.
Those are off the top of my head.

Weren't you active on the forum during this time of troubles?

Such as individuals creating new accounts to circumvent being banned?

Ahem. Take a look around. This is a specific subforum, set aside for fans of a webcomic. This is the only forum on CM with a moderator. I am not talking about the greater board, just this subforum, which is why I said "I'm primarily interested in what the refugees from the NightStar forums have to say". As in, do they want a more civil place, a moderated space or not.
However, if the y'all CMers think I need to start banning people...
/looks over at Kzach... (Nah, I'd never ban him. Long as he abides by the rules in the only thread I've laid down rules.)

I would like some basic civility, i.e., no explicit name-calling, in the interest of keeping debates from degenerating into insult shouting matches. That's pretty much all I can think of.
For example, "I think your theory about what [insert here] will do is stupid" would be annoying, but not actually ban-worthy in my book. But responding with, "Well, you are a shithead" would be ban-able (at least for repeated offenses, and just as much for the lack of creativity as much as the actual insult).
On that note, I thought of something else: do we want to keep language 'family friendly', in the interest of matching Schlock Mercenary's intended audience?
[edit] Just to be clear, I mean only in this sub-flora. I'm all for insult shouting elsewhere in CM.[/edit]

Forums that are burning to the ground in August (if I remember the time frame correctly). The Nightstar Zoo. In their heyday they hosted a bunch of webcomic forums and was the forum for the Nightstar Zoo... but for the last decade it's only been home to the Schlock Mercenary webcomic forum and a few hanger-ons that don't much like to use the Nightstar chat or Discord... much like CM is now (hangeronwise that is). I asked and Mo agreed to open the doors here to the Schlock Mercenary refugees, much like he once did for the NKL refugees.

Hey, I actually read Schlock Mercenary. But honestly, I feel like I kinda lost track of the story at some point, even though I read it every day. But that's for another thread, I suppose.
No idea what rules you need, though.

The other sections of the boards on here strive for a modicum of civility. There are certain forms of linguistic interaction where abuse/insulting language can be an expression of affection. The Senate is a veritable love fest of such expression.

Civility and the Senate are two words and concepts that are utterly foreign to each other. Maybe a cheeky disclaimer in that forum to warn people? It's been so long ago, I forgot. I either wasn't active on the particular sub-forum it happened in, on vacation or I came on right after the big blowup. I remember that it was a huge bad thing though.

Rule #1: Don't be a dick. Rule #2: keep Schlock stuff within the Shlock subforum. Rule #3: keep unrelated stuff like irl politics and religious OUT of the Shlock subforum.

I like this, but I think it could use a little tweaking. First, a little Palahniuk. Another suggested rule. Then ?>RENUM
Rule #1: Don't be a dick.
Rule #2: Don't be a dick.
Rule #3: If you're trying to see what you can get away with without crossing the line, you've already crossed the line. See rules 1 and 2.
Rule #4: keep Schlock stuff within the Schlock subforum. Rule #5: keep unrelated stuff like irl politics and religious OUT of the Schlock subforum.

There. We have our rules.

Sounds good to me. Of course I'm enforcing the rules, so the less work on my part the happier I'll be...
