Glad you're finally catching up and understand Republicans are promoting an agenda influenced by liberal ideology in this case: the free market of realities ideas. I agree, The American Liberal party is also shifting to the right. I... what? The Left keeps going further left. The Right keeps being drug left, as is what usually happens as last years liberal ideas become tradition. Authoritarianism is neither left nor right and is very much both Left and Right. Some on the left keep trying to go left, but for the most part, the Liberals have been shifting to the right for a long time. The Conservatives seemed to go hard-Right in response to Obama being elected. Suddenly, racism is good again and white nationalists can advise the President.
Trump doesn't conform to either party, but will do whatever he thinks will earn him the most money and/or power. He plays to the hard Right, so they back him.
