Boris Johnson has recently been caught being a politician, and there's lots of moral outrage about it in the UK, as politicians are generally expected to successfully pretend to be normal human beings. The NYT has a good article summing it up: www.nytimes.com/2022/01/22/world/europe/coronavirus-boris-johnson-novak-djokovic-hypocrisy.htmlThe general sentiment to oust him - which has been gathering steam over the past few weeks - is depressingly short-sighted, as the favorite to replace him is a billionaire Thatcherite by the name of Rishi Sunak, who wants to cut taxes for the rich and increase them for the poor. Boris is an incompetent, oafish, vacuous, populist, lying hypocrite. But he's also a centrist, so I'm thinking that jettisoning him might not be such a good idea after all.

The only hope is that Sunak won't be so corrupt and irresponsible, and that he'll have to fight Parliament to get anything horrid done. WHere BoJo had the backing of large swathes of Parliament and help getting away with his bullshit. Basically watching BoJo the last two years is what Trump would have been like if more Repubs and Dems had followed him... instead Trump didn't get a free pass and was limited. /thumbsup.jpg I wouldn't expect much out that wanna-be fascist regime. If Assange had dealt the Aussie gov as many damaging articles as he's dealt us (the US), I'm sure the current Aussie gov would want his head on a platter as well.

- Mitch McConnell
You'd think that he'd have noticed their dark skin or something. Or is his staff simply so vast? Maybe he only employs Americans.

The US government works best for the little guy when democrats and republicans are at each other's throats. IE: They are too busy screwing each other than to mess with us.

Freedom of Speech means letting people have the right to say stupid things too. But authoritarians don't understand this concept. And having strong States rights means allowing States to occasional do things the rest of the country thinks is terrible. But again, authoritarians don't understand this.

And having strong States rights means allowing States to occasional do things the rest of the country thinks is terrible. But again, authoritarians don't understand this. Fascists - crypto-, neo- or otherwise - are always quick to point the finger and accuse their detractors of their own bullshit: " I'm not the authoritarian, you are; I'm not the racist, you are." It's literally the oldest trick in the totalitarian handbook, and your last president virtually made a career out of it. We can keep our fingers crossed that " Teh Almighty Constitution" will prevent these fundie loonies from enacting their bonkers agendas, but the steady chip- chip- chipping away at rights will probably just move to another theater. I think it's great that you care about freedom of speech, but there are a lot of your fellow Americans who couldn't give a fuck. Oh, sure, they like to shout "Freedom of Speech, yo!" but they understand it about as well as they actually understand the contents of the Bible.

Strong State rights don't do anything to protect the people. If any government entity gets too strong, they can and will stomp on the necks of the little guy. Power corrupts, strong power corrupts alot and absolute power, corrupts absolutely. Personally, I don't want the State or the Fed to have any more power than they have over me.

]And those state legislatures wouldn't be demonstrating authoritarian characteristics themselves? Maybe, but being closer to the constituents (ie directly elected by a smaller population of people) means being easier and more likely for those constituents to replace them if their are acting in ways the constituents are displeased with. But you already knew this. Or you should have, it's Politics 101, mayors are easier for a small dissatisfied populace to replace than governors are, than congress critters are, etc. Strong State rights don't do anything to protect the people. Of course it does. It's why the entire country [isn't] a 'sanctuary city', just a handful of extremely liberal places. It's why only a few counties are going book banning this winter instead of the whole country (imagine if those few were in charge of the whole country?), it's why there's only one crazy liberal place that allows abortion right up to viable delivery, and a few where they barely allow them at all. Then why do you constantly insist the Fed get more power of the States? I know why, but I'm sure you don't.
