Minnesota GOP candidate who once said he'd 'try to ban abortion' now declares it a 'constitutional right' while holding a baby as he trails in the polls: linkGod, these people are pathetic. When Jerry Falwell (Senior, not Junior; the one with the bond fraud and trademark violations, not the kinky one with the pool boy) first championed the "Pro-Life" stance in the late 70s, he waited five years after Roe before realizing he could galvanize an evangelical lobby around this wedge issue. That's how much he gave a shit, and the dumb-ass fundies just followed blindly. The whole thing is such bullshit.

Stupid things Republicans say: "Child rape victims have options, like plan B" “I do trust women enough to control when they allow a man to ejaculate inside of them and to control that intake of semen.” "The womb is for babies (and nothing else). It is truly a sanctuary." "Attempted extermination of the Jews of World War II doesn’t even compare on a shadow of the life that has been lost with abortion since its legalization." link

So much for States' Rights regarding abortion bans[1]. I wonder how this move will affect congressional races this Fall.

You mean the same Lindsey Graham who was on the record only a few weeks ago stressing how important States' Rights were in this determination? Like the way he went on the record to not support the appointment of a Supreme Court judge within an election year, and them jammed one through as fast as he could a week before an election? The same Lindsey Graham who decried and condemned Trump as a racist and a bigot? The same Lindsey Graham who asked a Supreme Court nominee to rate her "faithfulness" on a scale of 1 to 10? Color me surprised. I can't imagine someone better placed than a repressed homosexual old white dude with no children, brainwashed from youth by the evangelical lobby, to decide women's health issues. Mitch is moving as quickly as he can to put this fire out, but Graham may have just handed the midterms to the Democrats on a plate - if they can get their shit together and leverage this to maximum effect.

... a repressed homosexual old white dude with no children... One, how very bigoted of you, two, who cares if he is a repressed homosexual? His life, his choice in mates or no mates. Maybe Lindsay is just asexual. Regardless, that's not a very progressive look my dude.

Maybe Lindsay is just asexual. Regardless, that's not a very progressive look my dude. I think the implication is pretty clear - Lindsey Graham is almost uniquely unqualified to make medical determinations about uteruses, and he pulled "15 weeks" out of - what, the ether? But none of this addresses the actual anguish, humiliation, pain and anger experienced by many women since the overturning of Roe, nor the real threats to their medical wellbeing - of which I have provided many examples. It's almost as though you would rather explore anything except the actual substance of the thread.

That's approximately the time of what used to be called the quickening. When the fetus first starts moving. Historically, in the US, there wasn't a total ban on abortion. It may have said so in the laws, but they never even tried to prosecute if done before the quickening. That didn't change until well into the 20th century. In any case, the heartbeat laws are causing severe harm. You're right there. Because they have such stringent requirements, doctors don't want to accidentally break them out of fear of the repercussions. Meaning that pregnancies that pretty much everyone would agree should be terminated aren't, sometimes seriously endangering the woman who is pregnant. As was obviously going to happen with this. And, of course, they're trying to make it a federal ban. As was also obviously going to happen.

Unusually, fetal activity is physically detectable as early as 16 weeks. But this is just as arbitrary as any other metric (conception, heartbeat etc.). Cwiċ - Old English, "alive" - which should give some indication as to the framework these nutjobs operate within.
